The behavior of capillary suspensions at diverse length scales: From single capillary bridges to bulk

چکیده

Liquid-liquid-solid systems are becoming increasingly common in everyday life with many possible applications. Here, we focus on a special case of such liquid-liquid-solid systems, namely, capillary suspensions. These suspensions originate from particles that form network based forces and typically composed solids bulk liquid an added secondary liquid. The structure particle networks bridges possesses unique properties compared formed via other attractive interactions where these differences inherently related to the bridges, as bridge breaking coalescence between adjacent bridges. Thus, tailor mechanical specific requirements, it is important understand influences different length scales ranging dynamics varying external stimuli often heterogeneous structure.

Using capillary bridges to tune stability and flow behavior of food suspensions

Adding a small amount of an immiscible fluid to a particle suspension can lead to particle bridging and network formation. This effect occurs both if the secondary fluid wets the particles better or worse than the bulk fluid. The capillary bridging phenomenon can be used to stabilize particle suspensions and precisely tune their rheological properties. This allows stable food products to be cre...

Capillary suspensions: Particle networks formed through the capillary force.

The addition of small amounts of a secondary fluid to a suspension can, through the attractive capillary force, lead to particle bridging and network formation. The capillary bridging phenomenon can be used to stabilize particle suspensions and precisely tune their rheological properties. This effect can even occur when the secondary fluid wets the particles less well than the bulk fluid. These...

Highly conductive, printable pastes from capillary suspensions

We have used the capillary suspension phenomenon to design conductive pastes for printed electronic applications, such as front side metallization of solar cells, without non-volatile, organic additives that often deteriorate electrical properties. Adding a small amount of a second, immiscible fluid to a suspension creates a network of liquid bridges between the particles. This capillary force-...

Evaporation and instabilities of microscopic capillary bridges.

The formation and disappearance of liquid bridges between two surfaces can occur either through equilibrium or nonequilibrium processes. In the first instance, the bridge molecules are in thermodynamic equilibrium with the surrounding vapor medium. In the second, chemical potential gradients result in material transfer; mechanical instabilities, because of van der Waals force jumps on approach ...

Capillary penetration failure of blood suspensions.

Blood suspension fails to penetrate a capillary with radius R less than 50 microm even if the capillary is perfectly wettable. This invasion threshold is attributed to three red blood cells (RBCs) segregation mechanisms--corner deflection at the entrance, the intermediate deformation-induced radial migration and shear-induced diffusion within a packed slug at the meniscus. The shear-induced rad...
